Are your itineraries affected by recent flooding in the Kimberley?
In January of 2023 parts of the Kimberley experienced their worst flooding in recorded history. The flooding destroyed the main Fitzroy River bridge at Fitzroy Crossing and caused road damage around the Willare Bridge crossing. As of March 2023, the road has reopened to traffic at Willare Bridge and a temporary crossing at Fitzroy River should be ready early in April while construction of a new bridge gets underway. We anticipate longer than usual times to move through these areas, but not significant delays.
With regards to itineraries, the majority of Kimberley will be accessible as normal including highlights such as the Gibb River Road, El Questro, Lake Argyle, Purnululu (Bungles) & Tunnel Creek. Two National parks we visit will not be accessible in 2023 due to infrastructure damage: Geikie Gorge and Windjana Gorge. While these gorges feature in most of our extended itineraries, they are often just a small part of the broader Kimberley experience. A vast area, the Kimberley offers so many opportunities for adventure that we will easily adapt each itinerary we operate to allow for new experiences and more extended exploration.
The landscape will be looking spectacular this year after a great wet season: waterfalls will be thundering, swimming holes will be clean and fresh and our native wildlife will be thriving. So, while there are two destinations that we are unable to visit in the short term due to flood damage, those same big rains will mean the Kimberley has never been fresher. The season of 2023 promises to be an extra special opportunity to experience the Australian outback at its best.
